Yep, my hair is done and my lipstick on. I may look pulled together, but I feel like 10 miles of bad road (I’ve always loved that expression).
I’m not physically worn out. Rather, I’m suffering from soul exhaustion. I won’t bore you with the details because I am sure you, too, are tired from holding your own bag of real-life stuff.
After several months of our real-life stuff dragging us down, my husband and I came crashing into summer a little stunned.
On an evening in June, tired and with a serious case of the blues, I said to my guy, “We need a vacation – I need to go somewhere and be quiet with you.”
I was thinking somewhere south, near the ocean, say South Carolina. But my guy had a different idea. An all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean was selected and the countdown was on. And now it’s here. Tomorrow morning we jump on a plane and will land on a tropical beach.
I know not all of us can swing a week on a beach, but I hope that if you’re soul-tired you are finding a way to take care of you. I read something online, from who knows where, that said, “Check on your strong friend.”
Are you the strong friend? The one not putting on your oxygen mask first?
Please, if sitting on the beach isn’t an option, take care of yourself in whatever way you can. Read a favorite book, sip a cup of tea on your front porch, take yourself to the movies and don’t share the popcorn, go to church, take a walk, sit with your best friend, rest.
Whatever time and space you can carve out to see to your needs, do it. Don’t wait for good timing because, as they say, conditions are always terrible.
